First Day on the Loop 7/27/2019

We left port from MacRay Harbor on Lk. St. Clair, MI at 7:56 AM, destination is East Tawas. Beautiful weather to leave in and ran at an average speed of 23 mph and up to 32 in Lake Huron for a 135 mile run. We saw many freighters on the river heading out to lake Huron, and the current in the river seemed stronger than usual. We have been to all the ports on Lake Huron and we wanted to get as far north we as could to make sure we can make it to Beaver Island by Thursday for a music festival that Val’s violin teacher, Marla was going to perform in. Well the wind picked up to 25 mph in the Saginaw Bay and we had to pull into Port Austin in High seas at 1:45 PM, in mostly 5-6′ waves with some rolling 8 footers. Some nice Canadians came in about one hour after us and had said they were in 14′ waves, YIKES.

We met a lot of nice people here and the harbor master and crew are great for this quaint town that should not be missed.

The calm weather window expected on Sunday may change our plans to go to East Tawas and we may make a 160 mile run all the way to Mackinaw City.

Lake Huron was so calm I could drive with the top open and stand on the helm seat. It makes for a bad hair day.
